It depends! Aircraft owners are allowed to do preventative maintenance, but most problems on a plane that might be labeled as complicated require an inspection by an IA/ A&P Mechanic.

Preventative maintenance includes things like replacing fluid / air levels hydaulics and struts, removing and installing landing gear tires, and replacing and cleaning sparkplugs.

For more info about what's allowed here's an FAA guide.

Even if a type of owner maintenance is allowed by the FAA it can be beneficial to have an A&P handle it because our eyes are trained to spot not just the work being done but any other issues that might be visible such as oil / fuel leaks, cracks in the metal, and unusal signs of wear.

An A&P (Aircraft & Powerplant) is someone who has undergone training & schooling and recieved a certification from the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) to sign off complicated repairs to aircraft.

An IA (Inspection Authorization) is an additional certification that A&P mechanics can recieve after minimum 3 years of A&P experience and after passing additional testing. An IA is necessary for signing off the airworthiness of major repairs or major alterations done to an aircraft.

This can often be caused by gaps in your engine baffling. The purpose of the baffling is to direct air over the engine as you fly. If there is a big hole or gap in your baffling, your engine is much more likely to overheat. This is an often overlooked problem that we've identified on many planes.

In the southern US where we operate, mud dauber wasp like to use pitot tubes to build nest. When your planes pitot tube becomes clogged with mud, ice or other debris it won't read correctly.

To clean out a pitot tube takes percision to not damage the sensative equipment so you should contact a mechanic. If this is your issue it is a quick fix when done by an experienced mechanic.
